Mood is: BRUSHES
I PERSONALLY OWN THREE HAIRBRUSHES AND NOT ONE IS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO ELIMINATE ANOTHER. I FIND THIS INEFFICIENCY DEFINED PERFECTLY BY THE BLESS BEAUTY BRUSH, WHERE “HAIR BRUSH” IS EXPRESSED LITERALLY IN OBJECT FORM (ALTHOUGH THAT INTERPRETATION DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE THE CREATORS’ INTENT). IT LEAVES ME WONDERING, ARE BRUSHES DEFINED BY THEIR USABILITY? PAINTING, SMOOTHING, SWEEPING… OR FORM? BRISTLE ATTACHED TO HANDLE. TLDR; I DON’T ANSWER THIS RHETORICAL QUESTION, BUT IN THE TRUE ESSENCE OF MOOD IS: MY MUSINGS ON MY COLLECTION OF BRUSHES, AHEAD.
BRUSH AS SCULPTURE
Earlier this summer, rock artist @samfink had a studio sale on Instagram. Fast forward a few story slides and I am now the proud owner of a granite rock brush. It lives on my dresser. I couldn’t be happier.
A BIG BRUSH
I’m not sure what this brush was intended for, but a light Goog suggests suede. I am less interested in that than I am the san serif RALPH LAUREN, which to me said, “FASHION OBJECT” – which I love. I have it on display as a sort of riser to keep my sleeping eye mask afloat. It also lives on my dresser.
PORTUGUESE BRUSH
I bought this brush from my second favorite store in Porto: Escovaria De Belomonte. (My first favorite was the toothpaste store, but that is for another newsletter). It is very light in weight, with delicate bristles that I believe/remember are goat hairs. It made for a good souvenir. I use it to dust off my keyboard.
TOILET BRUSH (!)
Toilet brushes are a real white space opportunity for anyone willing to go there. The only one I see winning the form/function game is the Iris Hantverk “Toilet Brush Nature Cup.” However at nearly $80USD per, I sought to make my own using Iris’s brush, a vintage French stoneware jar (similar), and a mini mesh sink strainer for airflow in the bottom of the pot. It works very well.
METALLIC TOOTHBRUSH
The only brush from my collection no longer in my possession: a metallic toothbrush. My affection for chrome could very possibly be traced back to the day my mom and I stumbled into New London Pharmacy on an early pilgrimage to NYC, and I felt a gravitational pull towards these tooth trophies. I had one in gold and one in silver. You don’t not buy both.
